Amber Gris Caye, go fast boats & sharks

Last night the North Belize Medical Team returned from the Corozal District after breaking down the last clinic in San Joaquin on Friday afternoon. It was a long trip south back to Belize City and we arrived in the early evening. This morning most got up early to catch a chartered “go fast boat” to take us to Amber Gris Caye which is a resort island about 2 hours off the coast from Belize City. It sits on the edge of the second largest barrier reef in the world and offers some fantastic fishing, diving and snorkeling – we planned on doing the latter.

We arrived and were able to spend a couple of hours poking around the island. I remembered a spot where I tried to get Maddie to feed the tarpon 2 years ago on a prior trip, but she couldn’t quite get the nerve up to put her hand close enough to the water with a bait fish. But the fearless Dr. Ben Covington was more than game and had several helpers direct his bare-hand fishing with great success! See below…

We then loaded back up and scooted to the reef edge and snorkeled with the sharks, barracuda, turtles, sting rays and more colored fish than one could imagine. It was a treat to be soaking the sun in cool waters with good friends after working a challenging week inland for the people of Belize. We all fly back on Sunday to our respective jobs and families, but will certainly remember this mission trip as one of the best ones…until next year of course!

More images to come as I sort through the best over the next several weeks. All images can be downloaded by simply right-clicking. Enjoy.

Yep, it is a little unnerving when a 40lb fish comes flying out of the water to take a small bait fish from your bare hand….and yes, I still have ten fingers!
