Light, bokeh & portraiture

The longer I shoot images, the more enamored I become with light & bokeh. I think this is a common step in the progression as you mature in your photography. The first step of course is to learn how to capture images with good light. Classically this will be the beginning or the end of the day. However, simply positioning yourself and subject can make a big difference as well. For example, Kelly and I shot this during a weekend in October. It was a blustery day and later afternoon, but still well before the “magic hour”. I placed her literally in a brush pile and had her lean towards me while she was in the shade. Then exposing the image for her, rather than the brighter background was key. The background was blown-out a bit, but the light reflecting of the autumn oak leaves created a brillant bokeh effect that was enhanced by shooting at f/1.4.

It helps to have a lovely model as well…
